Dr. José Ramón Armengol Miró: A tribute in memoria

A pioneer of technology whose dedication to advancing the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy was internationally respected.

It was with deep sadness that ESGE received the news from our member society SEED, the Spanish Society of Digestive Endoscopy, that Dr. José Ramón Armengol Miró passed away on October 9, 2022. Born in 1944, he was an internationally respected and influential gastrointestinal endoscopist, and one of the pioneers in the field. His career saw him hold the position of Chief of the Digestive and Endoscopy Department of the Vall d`Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona and Chief of the Digestive Endoscopy Department of the Quirón Hospital in Barcelona.

Dr. Armengol Miró’s strong commitment to gastrointestinal endoscopy led him to work intensely. “My great obsession has been to be able to treat the greatest number of patients and to have the most technologically advanced equipment available,” he declared in an interview.

Between 1987 and 1990, Dr Armengol Miró served as president of SEED and in 2005, in recognition of his career, was awarded the SEED Gold Medal, their highest distinction.

ESGE had the privilege to be served by him as president between 1994 and 1996. We remain indebted to his dedication to furthering our society and the medical speciality for which we share a passion.
