About ESGE
The European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) is dedicated to the advance of skilled endoscopic practice through workshops, publication of guidelines, and research. It represents national societies of endoscopy in Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa.

Eligibility for election as committee chair on the Governing Board
ESGE Individual Members may put themselves forward for nomination. Only members who have paid their annual dues may be considered. Those with trainee status are not eligible to become ESGE committee chairs.

According to the decision of the Governing Board, the Executive Committee reviews applications and selects up to four for each Chair position for General Assembly elections. Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience on the committee for which they apply for a chair position.

Six weeks before the elections the candidatures for open chair positions are communicated to General Assembly members. The second term of a Standing Committee Chair may be automatically extended pending Executive Committee approval. In such cases, the Chair is not required to stand for election.

Role of the Committee Chair on the Governing Board
As a voting member of the ESGE Governing Board, committee chairs are involved in ESGE’s decision making process.

Candidature of active and dedicated persons is encouraged. It is required to be capable of and willing to dedicate a substantial amount of time to this position.

Committee chairs are required to attend three ESGE Governing Board meetings (virtual or face to face) per year, and to participate in regular web-based calls. Attendance is also required at the annual ESGE General Assembly.

Term of office
The committee chair term begins at the ESGE General Assembly at ESGE Days and ends after two years, terminating at the ESGE General Assembly. An individual may chair a specific committee for a maximum of two terms.

ESGE Statutes and Rules of Procedure

§12 (4) Committee Chair elections:
Nominations for committee chairpersons must be submitted in text form to the Executive Committee at least 2 months prior to the General Assembly.

§14 (a) Election and Term of Office of the Governing Board:
The voting members of the General Assembly shall elect Chairs of the Standing Committees at the General Assembly. An individual may chair a specific committee for a maximum of two terms.

Scientific Committee Chair responsibilities
As the chair of this committee, you will be required to have served at least one term as Scientific Committee member. You will be responsible for:

  • Developing, implementing and overseeing the scientific content of the ESGE Days congress
  • Overseeing the Hands-On Training activities under the responsibility of the Education Committee Chair
  • Conceptualizing, managing and overseeing the ESGE Days abstracts review and allocation process
  • Coordinating and managing working Group leaders and their teams in the development of the programme content
  • Cooperation with the ESGE Office team and technical providers in the development of the ESGE Days virtual platform
  • Participating in weekly planning meetings with the ESGE Office
