Professor Anthony Axon is President of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He was appointed Consultant Physician to the General Infirmary at Leeds in 1975 and Honorary Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Leeds in 1995.

He chaired the endoscopy section of the British Society of Gastroenterology from 1989 - 1991 as Vice-President (Endoscopy) of the Society. He was President of the British Society of Gastroenterology 2000 - 2001. He is currently a member of the Education Committee of the World Organisation of Gastroenterology. a council member of the World Organisation of Endoscopy (OMED) and a member of the governing Council of the United European Gastroenterology Federation (UEGF). He has been a member of the Council of the Royal College of Physicians of London.

Professor Axon has written extensively on gastrointestinal subjects including ERCP, cancer surveillance, inflammatory bowel disease and safety in endoscopy. He has a particular interest in Helicobacter pylori, its treatment and its relationship to gastric cancer. He has lectured widely in these areas and is co-author of over 315 papers.

Doctor Alberto Montori graduated in Medicine in February 1960, is nowadays Chairman and Professor of Surgery at the University of Rome "La Sapienza".

Acting Chairman of the United European Gastroenterology Federation (UEGF), President of UEGF Foundation and one of the Member of the Council of the Organisation Mondiale d'Endoscopie Digestive (OMED).

Professor Montori's international reputation is based on his skills as a surgeon, as an endoscopist and educator-scholar, and an outstanding organizational leader. His clinical and scholarly accomplishments include developing non-invasive techniques for preventing and treating benign and malignant gastrointestinal disorders, conducting major international symposia, teaching thousands of medical students and residents. In 1971 he has introduced in the clinical practice the intraoperative endoscopy (upper and lower); in 1975 he performed the first endoscopic polypectomy of the jejunum and he has introduced in Italy, together with his co- workers, the endoscopic sphinterotomy.

Professor Montori has played key leadership roles in many professional surgical and gastrointestinal endoscopic organizations at home and abroad, where he has received many honours and awards. The Dean's Medal of the Thomas Jefferson Medical School of Philadelphia recognizes Prof. Montori's exceptional achievement in conceiving, promoting, and implementing world wide, the Academic relationships.

Member of the Medical Academy of Rome, the Italian Biologic and Medical Sciences Academy, the New York Academy of Science, the Italian Academy of History of Sanitary's Art, the Italian Society of Colo-Proctology and of many other International Academies in the United States, in Russia, in China and in various European Countries.

Honorary Member of many prominent Scientific Societies : Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), Yugoslav Gastroenterology Endoscopy Association, Academia Peruana de Cirugia, Societatea Româna de Chirurgie, Polish Society of Gastroenterology, COSMAD, etc. He has received the Medical Education Development Award of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.

He was Honorary President of numerous International Scientific Congresses. President of the 6th World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery, Rome,1998. Medal of Honour of the 7th World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery, Singapore 2000, Honorary President of the 8th International Congress of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery, Nice 2000.

He will be Co-Honorary President of the 1st European Symposium "Ethics in Gastroenterology & Digestive Endoscopy" - June 27-30, 2002 Island of Kos.

Doctor Jean-François Rey was born in 1947 and graduated at the Medical School of Marseille, France in 1974 (Pr H. Sarles).

He trained in hepato-gastroenterology in Nice under the teaching of Professor Jean Delmont. He was clinical assistant at the Bristol Royal Infirmary under the teaching of Professor Alan Read in 1975 and qualified as a hepato-gastroenterologist in 1978. Since 1978 he has been working in a private non-profit making institution, L'Institut Arnault Tzanck, Saint Laurent du Var, France, near Nice. He is in charge of 36 beds, including hospitalisation, out-clinic patients and emergency care, for upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy, with three colleagues. He is Chairman of the Medical Board of the Institution since 1988. In this institution, more than 8000 endoscopic examinations are performed every year including 500 therapeutic ERCPs. All therapeutic and diagnostic endoscopies are routinely performed. Locally, there are regular training courses for endoscopists and endoscopic nurses. The endoscopic unit is chaired by Mrs. Duforest-Rey the Treasurer of the European Nursing Endoscopic Association, ESGENA.

Doctor Jean-François Rey is currently General Secretary for the European Society for Digestive Endoscopy, ESGE since 1996, and he was previously Treasurer of the ESGE (1992). In France he was on the board of the French Society for Digestive Endoscopy since 1982. He was General Secretary from 1982 until 1988, and President 1988- 1990. He is also Chairman of the Union for all French Hepato-gastroenterologists (SYNMAD) and Chairman of the Union of Subspecialists (UMESPE), the most powerful medical union in this country. From this position he is in charge of negotiating the coding system and the medical fees reimbursement.

He is on the board of several journals including Endoscopy and Gastro-enterological Endoscopy and published numerous papers on digestive endoscopy.

Doctor Jean-François Rey has participated as an invited faculty member in several meetings in Europe, United States and Africa. He is in charge, as Course Director of the Video Digest, the official post-graduate course of the French Society of Digestive Endoscopy. 700 gastro-enterologists meet in Paris every year during the first week-end of November.

As a young endoscopist in 1974, Doctor Rey developed the ERCP in the Nice area, then endoscopic sphincterotomy in 1976. Since 1980 therapeutic biliary and hepatic endoscopy has been further developed with plastic and metallic stenting. Since 1988, Doctor Rey has worked closely on the clinical benefits of magnification endoscopes and he has also published papers and video tapes in this field. As the Secretary for the French Society for Digestive Endoscopy in 1982, Doctor Rey wrote the first Guidelines for Cleaning and Disinfection in France. He is currently in charge of Guidelines Committee at European level as co-chairman with Dr Kruse since 1993.

On hepatogastroenterology subjects he wrote or participated to more 450 papers, chapter's book or lectures. He has also produced numerous teaching materials including more than 50 videotapes or DVD.

DIRECTOR OF GASTROINTESTINAL ENDOSCOPY UNIT, Cairo university.This is the largest endoscopy unit in the Middle East, it was established in 1960 by Late Prof.A.El-Rooby on a small scale and then started to grow up untill 1974 where he started to work with the fiberoptic endoscopes and then in 1984 where it was shifted to a larger place in the faculty where it encluded x-ray machine for pancreatico-biliary work and was supplied with laser , videoendoscopes and endosonography and then motility laboratory.The unit is the master of endoscopic training in Egypt

GENERAL SECRETARY OF the Egyptian society of gastrointestinal endoscopy.

PRINCIPLE INVESTIGATOR OF A BIG TRAINING PROJECT for doctors, nurses and lab.technicians supervised by the ministery of health and funded by the social fund for development in Giza gavernorate,and is one o the NGOs activities(Nahdet Misr Society) from 1995 till date.

MARRIED AND HAS TWO CHILDREN : one boy (physician ,same specialty as father) and a girl ( AUC GRADUATE ,,, mass communication).
Wife: Asmaa Farid Prof.of gynecology and obstetrics in Faculty of Medicine Cairo University.

a list of papers published in Egyptian as well as international periodicals in Tropical medicine, hepatitis,gastrointestinal endoscopy(diagnosis and therapy) and pediatric gastroenterology.

1. Medical education : in Boston University in 1984
2. Endoscopic training: in Hamburg , with Professor Nib Sohendra from 1989 and thenafter on regular visits.
3. To Rowanda and Cote devoir in Africa 1997-1998 with the Egyptian minister of health to help the population community there and to co-operate with doctors.
4. To China to visit Prof.Chu to study with him the effect of some herbal therapy on the inflammatroty bowel diseases.
